The Worcester County Extension Office Collection contains documents compiled by numerous county agents during the early 20th century. The Extension Office was formed through the University of Maryland system to gather data on local agricultural practices and provide demonstrations for farmers in caring for livestock and informing them of new agricultural practices and products. In addition, the county agent also performed a census of local homes, tracking child health, sanitation, and resources in rural communities and recommending educational programs and resources to local farm families. There is documentation of the names of local farmers, women, and children who were active in various local programs sponsored by the Extension Office.
The Worcester County Extension Office was founded by the University of Maryland system to investigate farming practices and provide educational and material resources to local farmers to give them aid in the years leading up to World War I. Quickly, the scope of the program expanded, with county agents responsible for investigating disease outbreaks, setting up agricultural clubs for children and adults, and implementing various programs for improvements in the standards of rural life.
This collection documents the reports, findings, and activities of the Worcester County Extension Office agents and local farmers. Due to the uniformity of materials, only one series is required.
Series I: Annual Reports: The files document the activities of local farmers and the county agents.
Series 2: Photographs: Group photographs taken for the Women’s Short Course.
