Abstract

The Maryland Arcadia Papers include correspondence, ephemera, brochures, envelopes, memos, and newsletters related to the planning and publication of Worcester County, Maryland’s Arcadia. Of importance is a 1977 House Resolution of the State of Maryland congratulating the authors, Reginald Van Trump Truitt (1890-1991) & Millard Grant Les Callette (1922-1977). 


Administrative History / Biographical Note

Worcester County, Maryland’s Arcadia is a comprehensive history of Worcester County that was originally published in 1976 to coincide with the nation’s bicentennial celebration. The authors, Reginald V. Truitt (1890-1991) and Milton LesCallette ( - ) worked with the Worcester County Historical Society to publish their work.

Dr. Reginald Van Trump Truitt (1890-1991) was “a native of Snow Hill whose family had been in the business of planting oysters in Chincoteague Bay, Dr. Truitt's interest in the Chesapeake and its residents helped him win many honors, including the 1981 Rachel Carson Award from the state and his inclusion in a group of "150 People Who Shaped the Way We Live" in a 1987 issue of the Sunday Sun magazine that celebrated the 150th anniversary of The Sun.”

Dr. Millard Grant Les Callette (1922-1977), a native of the Eastern Shore, was born in Crisfield, MD, on January 5, 1922. He graduated summa cum laude from Western Maryland College as a history major in 1952. He received his M.A. from Johns Hopkins University in 1954, his thesis titled "Study of Recruitment in the Union Army in the State of Maryland 1861-1865." He received his Ph.D. in 1962 from the University of Maryland College Park, his thesis titled "Lyman Trumbull and the Democratic Tradition." Dr. LesCallette was a history professor at Salisbury State College from 1959-1977.


Scope and Content Note

The four folders go in chronological order of correspondences related to publishing Worcester County, Maryland’s Arcadia. The first folders detail the celebrations being planned (1977), while the end folders detail the process of proof reading the book for publication and figuring out payments (1974-1976).
