Summer Reading 2025

Welcome to Summer Reading 2025!

Are you ready for a summer of fun, prizes, and reading? 

 

Worcester County Library’s Summer Reading Challenge gives children and teens opportunities to enrich their summer by reading engaging books and completing fun activities for the chance to earn prizes. Help the Library reach our goal of 500,000 minutes of reading this summer!  

Did you know if you read 15 minutes a day between June 2 - August 24 you'll have read for 1,245 minutes?!

Getting Started: 

  • Sign up (or log in) online or at your local library branch starting May 23rd. Begin logging your reading or activities starting June 2nd. 
  • If you’d like a paper gameboard ask at one of our branches when you sign up. 
  • Complete 15 of the gameboard activities until August 24th to earn 3 activity badges and incentive prizes as you play! Repeating activities count too!
  • Keep track of how many minutes you read and log it!

Earn extra badges towards our grand prize raffle by: 

  1. Going to our Story Walk
  2. Doing the collaborative art at each of the 5 library branches
  3. Visiting the Pop-Up Library at a community stop
  4. Reviewing a book 
  5. Read more than 4 hours (each additional hour earns a raffle ticket) 
  6. Donating to the backpack drive or creating a card
  7. Completing our survey about summer reading this year

If you need more suggestions, be sure to stop by your local branch to see our themed displays or get assistance from your friendly librarian. Summer Reading Challenge Activities

Gameboard Activities (Ages 0-5) 

Complete 15 of these gameboard activities until August 24th to earn 3 activity badges and incentive prizes as you play! Repeating activities count too!

This summer is all about creativity, these activities are just suggestions to start your literacy and imagination filled journey. Feel free to adjust them to work best for you and do them in any order! *If you read for 30 minutes as an activity don't forget to also log it for reading badges!*

  1. Read or be read to for 30 minutes 
  2. Attend a library story time
  3. Attend a library summer reading event
  4. Draw a picture and talk about it
  5. Act out a story
  6. Read a book with a blue cover
  7. Sing a song with words that rhyme
  8. Talk about a character’s emotions as you read a story
  9. Practice identifying colors that are around you
  10. Make handprint or footprint art inspired by a favorite story
  11. Create a “book of the day” by drawing something related to the book read
  12. Build a block tower or sculpture to represent a scene from a story
  13. Listen to a story and then make up your own version with toys or puppets
  14. Play a matching game with pictures and words from a favorite book
  15. Tell a family story or memory and ask your child to draw it
  16. Read a book with a red cover
  17. Listen to music as you color a picture
  18. Do a finger puppet show based on a favorite book
  19. Practice letter identification as you read a book
  20. Have a rainbow scavenger hunt as you look for colors around you

  • Create a new book cover for a favorite book
  • Build a cozy reading fort
  • Create a self portrait
  • Read a non-fiction book about a famous artist
  • Draw a picture or create a craft inspired by a book
  • Listen to or read a chapter book
  • Write a letter to a character in your favorite book
  • Create a comic strip version of your favorite scene from a book
  • Build a diorama of a setting from a book you’re reading
  • Write a short story and illustrate it with drawings
  • Write a poem inspired by art
  • Perform a skit inspired by a favorite book
  • Read a book with an orange cover
  • Create a treasure map based on a book’s setting
  • Design a character’s wardrobe from a favorite story
  • Play "book charades" by acting out scenes from books and having others guess
  • Read a graphic novel with a colorful cover
  • Create a recipe from a book

  • Create a new book cover for a favorite book
  • Read a book from the genre you wouldn’t normally read
  • Create a playlist for a book you love
  • Read a non-fiction book about a famous artist
  • Write a new ending to a book you have read recently
  • Choose your favorite quote from a favorite book and design an art piece around it.
  • Listen to or read a chapter book 
  • Illustrate a scene from a book with your own artistic style
  • Write a diary entry from the perspective of a character in a book
  • Create a book-inspired collage or mood board
  • Read a book with a blue cover
  • Organize a book swap with friends and share recommendations
  • Write a review of a book you've read and share it on social media or with a friend
  • Design a book trailer (video or storyboard) for a book you recommend
  • Write an alternative perspective of a story (e.g., from the villain's point of view)
  • Read a book that became a movie
  • Read a book with a 1-star review
  • Read manga with a colorful cover
